RPL survey – discussion of implications – Tues. Aug. 13
Friends of the Regina Public Library will be holding a meeting to discuss:
– the RPL survey questions
– the implications of the survey for library services
– the implications of the survey for library facilities
– the implications of the survey for Central Library
– the potential for upcoming release of designs and consultations
– what about people who can’t fill in an on-line survey & timing of the survey over summer
– actions to be taken

RPL survey – important considerations
What’s in the Survey?
Satisfaction with:
- RPL services and importance of services in all Branches
- Parking around Central Library – possibly leading to a costly underground parkade, and certain demolition of the current building
In an upgraded or new Central Library building, possible inclusion of:
- educational and cultural services
- access to public computers/technology
- meeting spaces, conference facilities
- museum, theatre, entertainment facilities
- coffee shop
- retail stores, grocery store
- offices and condos
When filling out the survey consider:
- services that are part of our library system that should be continued
- new services that would contribute to literacy of all kinds
- need to locate services in Central Library, requiring a much larger space
- much larger facility would likely lead to a presumed need for a public-private partnership to pay for costs

RPL survey – input on services and buildings
RPL Survey on until August 31, 2013
The online survey is intended to give input to the Regina Public Library Board about programs, services and facilities that Central Library and the Branches provide to their patrons. http://www.reginalibrary.ca/cld/
The Friends see Central Library as more than simply another branch but as an historic provider of the Children’s Branch, Dunlop Art Gallery, Film Theatre and Prairie History Room as part of the basics of the library system. For 51 years, these have been a valuable part of Regina’s libraries and need to be kept. An underground parkade, or other major additional demands will likely lead to demolishment of the current heritage modernist building.
The survey doesn’t ask about keeping the current building – put ideas on this and other topics in the last question. Please fill out the survey. Pass this on to your friends.

RPL Survey – response neeeded soon
The Regina Public Library has an on-line survey about library services and in particular about Central Library. This will be used in planning services and for the upgrade of the current Central Library Building / demolishment of the current building and construction of a new building. And for planning future library services. All who are interested in the library are strongly urged to fill in this questionnaire by the end of August. http://www.reginalibrary.ca/cld/
Perhaps copies could be printed and given to people who don’t have access to a computer.

I was out for a stroll tonight after we put the June 13 issue to bed and discovered that one of the elements in the interactive installation that Jeff Morton and Kathleen Irwin are presenting at the Dunlop Art Gallery called Play is up and running. RPL first online survey re Central Library complete
The RPL Board has just completed its survey about Central Library services and upgrade of the building.
We have been told by the library that a total of 815 interviews were conducted. 601 were completed by telephone, 210 online. The telephone respondents were generated by calling active numbers drawn from a list purchased commercially from a company that aggregates numbers from published sources. The online responses were generated by e-mailing addresses Praxis maintains. The e-mail addresses come from individuals interviewed in earlier telephone surveys, or who have been recruited periodically and who indicate they are willing to receive surveys.
A survey for patrons to fill out should be available soon – so keep your eyes open at the Library Branches and at the Library website.

The Modernist Central Library has just celebrated its 50th birthday. To celebrate the beauty and usefulness of this building which we love, we have gathered a few people to talk about a specific part of the architecture of Central Library that touches them, a special place within the library that they love, or a library service that they could not live without. In the spirit of Jane’s Walk, we welcome contributions from the audience. We hope that this chorus of individual voices singing the praises of Central RPL will reinforce the importance and significance of this distinctive modernist public building in the downtown cultural and architectural landscape of Regina. We will conclude with a 5 pm tour of the exterior of the Masonic Temple next door with one of the Masons.
